I've read just about everything about Fageol engines and I need some help. My dad left me a 1957 Carlisle Deluxe Open Runabout with a Fageol 44 VIP engine. The body is in OK shape and it has a mahogany wood body. The engine is in decent shape but hasn't been run in probably about 20 years. Is this boat worth anything? I would appreciate any help that anyone can give.

I don't know if anyone here can tell you if the boat is "worth anything"...
Somebody might be able to help you with the engine if you have specific questions.
I have the maintenance manual for the Fageol 44, I'm not sure about the "VIP" part... |

I have a Fageol outboard marine engine from the mid - late 50's. It came off our family boat in the late 60's and has been in the barn all these years. Who would want it?

Hello -
I have two Fageol (Crosley) marine engines. They are brand new, zero-time, in their wooden crates stamped "Fageol 44 V.I.P. (Vertical Inboard Power)". I have photos. They have never been removed from their crates; the original instruction manuals are in the boxes. I would like to let any interested party know that they are available for sale. I'm curious about the early 44 Cu.In. engines that were used in the 1950's in 48 Cu.In. hydroplanes. One difficulty with the original Crosley engine was the crankshaft strength. As I recall, the rule was: You had to have a crankshaft from an engine used in a generator built for the military (Navy?). Somebody had bought up the inventory and they were both scarce and expensive. Did Fageol build those generator? |

The worth of a mahogany wooden boat with its engine and hardware is typically in the eye of the beholder.
Most folks only think of the maintenance headaches and the annual (careful) haulout and storage.
But in the eye of a discerning and skilled restorer and rebuilder, there is great potential.
All you have to do is take a look at the annual antique boat shows run the ACBS ( Antique and Classic Boat Society). There are chapters all over the country.
I've known people to buy a boat eg a Ditchburn for $50k and spend another $100k to have it completely restored. They end up with a boat that is worth maybe $65k to $75k on the open market.
But they have something they really want (need?)
I'm sure you've seen the same thing for old cars - heck old anything except old people - we're virtually worthless when we get really old and antique.
Ditchburn boats by the way are the one of the most beautiful old wooden boats ever made. If you ever get to see the video - Dream Boats of Muskoka - you'll see what I mean.
If you want to establish a market price - get some good pictures and post it on eBay - sort of like going fishing - you've gotta get some bait out there. Or take it to one of the ACBS Boat Shows and see if anyone is interested.
But my own sense in the present economic circumstances is that you're better to wait a couple of years and then try it.

I have two Fageol 44 VIP engines for sale, new in original wooden factory crates. Cannot locate installation/maintenance manual now. Anyone know where I can find one? I'd like to have one to include with the engines.
