I will be making a quick trip to philly and baltimore later this month. I may have a day to look at a museum. what are my best bets. |

Bill,
In Philadelphia you could visit the Independance Seaport Museum which is downtown at what the call "Penns Landing" on the Delaware River. It is good museum and has some early marine engines: a Naptha launch, a MECCO engine (made in Philly).
Philadelphia also has The Franklin Institute, which has a lot of technical material, but has lately focused more on exibits for kids.
In Balitimore you could visit the Museum of Industry at the inner harbor. It has an early steam tug, and a working line shaft driven machine shop. They have a few early marine engines on display, and one or two scattered about in the machine shop.
If you wanted to take the time to go elsewhere in Maryland... then consider the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and the Calvert County Maritime Musuem.

That's good info on MECCO.
I have a MECCO 2 cylinder open base four stroke engine (in parts and in rough shape).
I also have photos of the single cylinder four stroke engine at the Independence Seaport Museum (Philadelphia) as well as some photos of another 2 cylinder engine that belongs to a collector in New Jersey.
I will post the photos of the engine at the museum and I will try to find the other photos.
