I have a Palmer PW27 in my sailboat. Last year it started getting harder to start. The electric starter/generator just didn't seem to have enough power to turn it over. Taking out the spark plug didn't make it any easier to turn over. I would have to manually wiggle the flywheel to get it unstuck. Any suggestions? Would synthetic oil help? |

Check your battery condition and your charging system. Are your battery cables good ? Oil won't make any difference |

Thanks for the reply. Electrical system is good, battery fully charged, connections clean and secure. I have the same problem if I connect my battery charger and use the car start mode. It seems to me that something inside the engine is seizing up. Normally with the spark plug removed I can turn the flywheel by hand several revolutions. When this happens I can't move the flywheel at all. I wiggle it back and forth vigorously until it breaks free. I am not a mechanic and taking the engine out is not an option I want to consider. |

I think you have a chunk of metal in the crankcase. This could jamb in the gears or get under the rod. When you rock the engine it must be falling loose. You have no choice but to take a look inside. |

Update to my original post for what it is worth. Engine is running great now, a little rich but I can live with that. I did many things to this engine to get it running so can't say if one thing fixed my problem or a combination of everything. What I did: 1:Sprayed Liquid Wrench in the spark plug hole, turned over engine several times. 2:Adjusted carb back to spec. 3:Replaced fuel, fuel filter and shorted fuel line to make a direct path to carb. 4:Reconnected all electrical connections. 5:Adjusted belt. 6:Changed oil. 7:New spark plug. After all of that engine starts easily and runs great. My only complaint is that I can't get the engine to run at low rpm without stalling. The manual indicates it should run at 400 rpm but I can only get down to 600 before it stalls. I don't know how to close my post off but it is complete. Thanks |
