Hi I was hoping someone might have an idea as to what is happening to our port side engine on a 1973 46' Harbor House houseboat. The engines are 351 Fords and after firing up both engines and leaving port, we cruise smoothly until port side engine gets up to around 150 degrees, then shuts down. It will start but as soon as we engage shifter it shuts down immediately. If we let the engine sit and cool down it runs fine until it gets up to temp again. Any thoughts what might be causing this?

Sounds like a classic weak coil symptom. Coils are rarely a problem but when they act up it tends to be when they are warmed up. Before you change out the coil though check that it isn't the condenser. Condensers can cause similar symptoms. In fact, condensers are notorious for being bad, brand new right out of the box. After periodic maintenance where the condenser is replaced be suspicious of the condenser if you have problems soon after. Having done that be sure that you get the correct coil. Some require external ballast and some do not. If in doubt it is safer to try one that does not require external ballast. |

I agree with Eddie here. We have been stranded and seen others that as the coil has gotten older and when the engine gets warmer, that heat is transferred into the coil and they will open up thus shutting your ignition down.
An inexpensive fix or try. Give it a whirl and let us know.

I agree.... quickest and inexpensive fix. or Switch the coil from the other engine, see if the problem follows it! |
