I just got a Gies special no. 1 pat june 11 1907 and a larger Gies model A I would like to know what one i would use with a 5or 6 hp motor. Anyone know someone i could talk with who knows how to restore them. |

They are pretty simple inside. I took a bunch of photos as I dismantled mine to make sure I could put it back together again. Didn't really need them.
This Gies ad shows how to calculate the size needed.

Interesting Ad. Based on it, if you operated your engine at 800 RPM #1 would handle 12 hp. |

Here are some of the photos I took of a Gies No. 1 Special while dismantling it. The stamped 1916 looks like the date of manufacture but I suppose it could be an assembly number. The patent number for the Gies is 856462.

Hello! Great looking reverse gear. I have the same one that I've just disassembled.
Any Issues since you've put it back together? What sort of grease do you put inside and how often do you replace it? Mine appears to be complete except for the brass grease cup.

Does anyone have a Model A Reverse gear, by GIES Gear Company, in reasonably good condition, that has been kept out of the weather, for sale? Asking price? |
