I just took over my parents boat and it has an Volvo Penta MD 67 C which hasn't seen any action for quite a few years now.
The issues it had when it ran a few years ago was that it "leaked fumes" through the valve covers.
Does anyone have any experience with this?
Do the valve seals leak too much and/or should these fumes be absorbed by the engine which means the valve-cover-gasket leaks?
Also I'd like to know whether and where I might get parts (especially to solve this problem).
Many thanks in advance.

Hi Geert,
The answer to your question is no, there should not be to many fumes coming through the rocker box but there will be some due to crank case pressure as the pistons go up and down, you may have badly worn valves stems/guides, and seats, you can check this be taking a compression test, if it is down on the spec. you will need to take the head off and get the valves, valves guides and seats done, and check the bores as well for wear, if they are bad with a heavy step you will need to either re ring the pistons or rebore ,and fit new pistons and rings, but that is not often required unless the engine has done a lot of work I do not know where you are, but I use Head Racing Developments in Ely Cambridgeshire, and get my parts in the main from KeyParts 01923 276000 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              01923 276000      end_of_the_skype_highlighting you should also have a pipe from the rocker box to the air filter to allow the engine to suck in any vapor from the rocker boxes and reburn it.

Salt or fresh water? How many hours on it? Sail or power boat? What does the oil look like?

Before pulling the head I would pull the injectors and squirt one of the Kroil products (Aereo or SiliKroil) into the cylinders. Turn it over a few times then let it sit for a week or two while you have the injectors tested. Have the injectors rebuilt if necessary, replace them, and see if that cures the problem. If not do the head job.

Change the oil and filter.

Geert,

Look at the ads at the right side of this page. Your Dutch name suggests that you live in Holland. Mulder Motoren in Bolnes (near Ridderkerk) is a good repair shop and a global supplier of VP parts.

Many thanks for your input and sorry for the late reply, somehow I didn't get any notification.
The boat is an old freighter which used to have an single cilinder 2 stroke diesel in it (Kromhout engine) which we replaced in 1984 with this Volvo MD67 which had not worked hard (came out an canal-cruiser). Hours I do not know.
Oil looks good, needs replacing but never had any quick discoloring.
Motor has always (only) been used on fresh water.
I think it must be the valves/seal only as the engine hardly produces any "smoke" through the exhaust. It also has always started properly and doesn't burn al lot of oil or diesel.
I need to check on the "fume-return pipe".
Will have the injectors checked/rebuilt and as the engine hasn't run for a while I'm going to replace all filters and fluids.
I'm indeed in Holland and will contact Mulder to find out what they have for this motor.
Certainly I will also come back to you guys!
Many thanks once again.

I am also looking for some replacement parts for a MD67 engine. We need to replace the cilinderhead gaskets. I have contacted volvo-penta Benelux but they indicated that they do not have any details on replacement parts in their database. However, if i can come up with a partnumber for the gasket they can see if this is available in their main warehouse. Does anybody know the particular partnumber for the MD67 gasket or knows where to buy them?

Hi Tjesco,
The only one I ever found is a manucturer in Germany who still makes the cilinderhead gasket:

Hi Guys,

I don't know if you can help, but we've just aquired an old tug with a Volvo-Penta D67C. First time I've come across this model but there's no manual (workshop or operators). Has anyone got, or does anyone know where I can get a copy of the D67C manual?

Thanks!
