Try e-mailing Robert Henkel in Michigan, USA. [email protected] His father Peter Henkel owned the remnants of Scripps engine company. Try John Worthy in Algonac Mi, His 1931 28' Gar Wood is now Volvo powered. He still has the original V12 350 hp Scripps. 1-1-313-794-3893

Hi Bruce,

You are a legend, I will let you know how I get on, I do not really know much about old wooden boats and engines but found a beat up Gar Wood 28 in a barn in the UK with the wrong engine and I need to find out the best options of getting her restored.

There are some real crafts people in the UK. I seem to recall reading about an annual vintage boat rally on Thames each year. What a tremendous barn find you have! Gar Woods are highly prized here. Gar Wood boats are being reproduced once again by Turcotte Brothers here in New York State. Gar Wood guru Tony Mollica can be reached at [email protected] He is Gar Wood records keeper and author of a grand book on Gar Wood Boats.Keep me posted.

Hi Giles, That should be a great boat. What engine did she have that will be replaced? Your best bet for Scripps is to look over in the USA as suggested in these posts, and some other places. Pretty scarce over here... Where are you located? I would love to have a peak at her, or see some pictures. I have experience of several pre-war boats and different restoration approaches, as well as some friends doing some similar things, so I might be of use to you.

Greetings Giles,

Please send more information on your boat with some pics. We would love to see her and the progress. As stated above, Gars are prized boats not only in the states but anywhere! And Baby Gars even more so if original. A lot of the Baby Gars came with Gar Wood converted Liberty Aircraft V-12 engines. A trifle faster than your average Thames slipper launch let alone the Thames speed limit!

There are many places in the US for parts and services. A lot of people here will be able to advise as well. You may also wish to join the Antique & Classic Boat Society (ACBS). It is quite inexpensive and the roster alone is a fantastic document for doing research and contacting owners of similar boats. The web site is http://www.acbs.org/ The chapters are mostly in the US but it is a worldwide organization. A good majority of the Gar Wood boats still in existence will be listed there.

Cheers,

Lew

It looks like Giles has had a problem uploading images of his Gar Wood. Here are a few that he sent to me including one of the dealer's badge. This was a genuine "barn find" I believe the standard engine for the 28 footers was a Scripps 202.

Good pics, would love to see more. From what I saw here, she looks more like a 1927 Baby Gar Jr raised deck.I will start looking through my records.

Cheers,

Lew

Nice call Lew! I think that you are spot on. here are some more photos that point to it being a 1927 Baby Gar Jr. First the windshield appears to be "after market" (I don't think that they even had a windshield that year) and would not even be correct on the 1929 boats where it was flat, not V shaped. Secondly the transom is substantially wider than the 1929 design.

Interestingly she may be sporting her original topside color. The boats were available with white, black, blue and varnished. I believe that they were offered with either a 100 hp Scripps F6 or a 150 hp G6.

Bill

I came across a 1927 Gar Wood Catalog....I was dead wrong about the windshield...But it does appear to be a 1927 Baby Gar Jr.

That is the direction I have been going as well. I have sent Giles several pics of a beautiful 1927 Baby Gar Jr. that friends own on Lake Tahoe.

This is a Gar Wood transom with the straight vertical section at the top. But a Baby Gar Jr. is only 26' I have asked Giles again for the length measurement. If it is a Jr, it has had a couple of mods here and there over the years. But that is to be expected.

Cheers,

Here is a shot of a 1927 Baby Gar Jr. 26'. The windshield detail is clear on this.

Beautiful! I like the original color of the seats... French Blue, which is the apparent color of Giles' Hull.

From the 1927 Baby Gar Jr. catalog:

The windshield glass profile is a bit more rounded here. The original frame was solid Monel as was all the hardware, including fasteners, used in construction.

The engine... Scripps G-6 or F-6 ?

Bill, great that you have the catalog! Beautiful copies. I would love to get a pdf copy of the entire catalog to give to the owner of the boat I posted. And it may be of help for Giles too.

The boat in the pic I posted yesterday originally had a Scripps G6 but now has a 440 Chrysler. She is a daily user on Lake Tahoe's West shore. Her windshield glass has also been cut down to make it a little easier to climb over to the forward deck. She is one of 78 Baby Gar Jr runabouts built and the only one I have ever seen.

I am just starting to look through a bunch of pics I received from Giles this morning. I will hopefully have more evidence soon.

Cheers,

Lew "The West Coast Sterling Guy"}
