My temperature gauge on my P60 suddenly is acting weird. After running the engine for a few minutes the gauge continues to read 60 but then if I tap the gauge, it jumps up to 240 and then stays there. The engine is not overheating, water is coming out of the exhaust. All the connections on the back of the gauge seem fine. Any suggestions? |

Sidaway, it sounds like the gauge has broken. If you tap it and it jumps from one end of the scale to the other (and probably neither is the correct temp), then you should replace it. Also, the gauge and the sender need to match, so they can talk to each other, so you should probably plan on replacing both.
You could also check the pick up point for the sender with an infra-red thermometer, or take off the sender and check the water flow to it.
You might also check your thermostat if you have a recycling loop in your cooling water line to make sure it is opening up when the engine warms up and let the water flow through the engine.
Lastly, be sure your steam escape line is open (front of cylinder head to thermostat housing), so that there are no steam pockets at the sender area.

David, thanks for the advice. Where exactly is the sender located on the engine? I am sure the thermostat is OK because water is coming out of the exhaust normally and the engine is not too hot to touch. The steam vent is clear too. Any recommendations of where to get a replacement gauge and sender unit? |

On the Palmer 60, the temperature sender is located in the cylinder head near the port rear in the regular configuration (away from the flywheel end), on top of the engine, screwed into a small housing unit.
You could probably get a new gauge and sender pair at any large ship's chandlery or try on line with a provider like Defender.com.

Why not try some International tractor parts counter or even tractor supply house..... |
