Does anyone know of a source for main and rod bearings for old unknown engines?
I have acquired an old single cylinder horizontal diesel engine with no markings. It was used to power a 7.5kw generator so I take the horsepower to be about 15. The bore is 4.375". It appears to be early 1900's vintage.
The bearings are in decent shape but, if possible, I would like to replace them. I want to restore this old beast and use it to power an irrigation pump in our vineyard. |

Matt,
Your orig bearings could be repoured and bored to size. Or if you provided housing bores, brg widths and journal sizes, then a search thru avail brgs could be made. |

Hi - 1900 diesel - Assume white metal or bronze bearing technology. If you can pour and scrape white metal bearings, or cast, machine and scrape new bronze bearings yourself, this will be a cost effective operation.
If you have to outsource and pay for this work you will have to find someone that can do this work and probably pay them lots.
If you are not an enthusiast, might end up cheaper selling this possibly valuable engine to a collector and buying a more modern workhorse... |

It is bronze and white metal. It had shims in it and doesn't look that bad. I'm thinking it will be OK, maybe I'll have to remove a shim or two. I've seen a lot worse.
As to value; it's pretty hard to get a handle because there are no markings or at least non I've found so far.---Matt |

It's hard to understand some of you guys. First you want some brgs, then you want to patch it up w/o spending any money. Baffles me. Maybe if you were honest you'd say "I'm here to get someone to tell me how to fix this for free and sell it for a bunch of money". I thought this site was for enthusiasts. Guess I was mistaken again, as usual. I have this dumb optimism for the human race. David |

Damm, you're tuff Dave. The guy said the bearings don't look that bad, but would prefer to replace them. None of the post presented a solution so he decided to use the originals. What caused you to go off on your rant? |

If the worst thing that happens is that the engine starts to really mis-behave after he's done the bearings,, Matt has a Plan B.
As we all know, you've ALWAYS got to have a Plan B.

Gentlemen, My apologies. It was a bad time to be posting. Pain and depression which accompanies Health issues. To keep my mind on something to distract me, I'd pulled out old brg catalogs and was ready to search inserts that might work for Matt. Having dimensions provided would have got me searching. Two bad concussions during the last year have me varying widely in mood also. I speak slowly now, can't utter a thoughtful sentence or think well at times. Wife's worried Medication changes aren't fun either. And of course the years of Cancer have me down at times. Typing this took 30 min. David |

No offense taken, apology accepted, though not necessary.
I am somewhat familiar with Witte and this could be one but what is puzzling is that there is no badge or markings of any kind on the engine. It does have American Bosch fuel pump and injector and an AC low pressure fuel pump. |
