I have recently acquired the engine in the attached photos, does anyone recognise the model designation of it. I plan on restoring it. Thanks for the help.

It will be an early model - it has a gib key and no nut - has a mixer not a carb - and it's a 3 port design ( no check valve on the intake)
And it has an interesting water pump arrangement.
Mr Durgee - c'mon - you should know this one.

Gray Motor Company introduced its first marine engines in 1906, these little engines were actually manufactured by DuBrie Motor Company for Gray.
The first engines mfgrd by Gray of their own design was in 1907 they never had a model number an were only made that one year 1907, The engine above is a 1907 Gray Marine Engine ! I only know of a about 6 of these engines to exist ? the original color was dark green.
The next year 1908 was the beginning of the engines with model desiginations R and S the model U came along in 1912 along with the Excellent model T engines !
The engine above is an excellent find and the first of the great Gray Motor Co.marine engines, at 107 years old a perfect classic to restore.

This engine probably has a serial number very lightly stamped into the face of the outer flywheel rim, very hard to see when engine has been repainted, strong light a little steel wool may uncover it, I have never been able to get a number from a 1907 ! If possible it would be appreciated !

Thank you all!! for the information. I haven't seen the engine in person yet. My friend was up north, at an antique outboard gathering and I asked him if there were any one lungers. He found some and connected me to the seller. One thing led to another and we both ended up with an engine each. He sent the photos to me. I will definately post serial numbers and photos and I'm sure, lots of questions. My goal is to restore it to as "original running" condition as possible. |
