I have a 1960 Crosby Striper with an IH 264 and a Paragon Gear. Engine & gear are raw water cooled. Have been restoring the boat for past 20 yrs. Getting close!! I rebuilt the engine at the beginning of the project. All hoses & lines were labeled, but, over time labels have worn off. I'm trying to figure out water line path for the Paragon Gear. Water comes in from the sea strainer to the water pump on the engine. It then goes into the engine oil cooler and into the engine and manifold. There seems to be no allowance for water to get to the gear after the water pump. There are 2 water line fittings on either side of the gear near the bottom of the housing. One is a "T" that is capped off with a short piece of hose and plug. I am not sure how the cooling water gets to the gear. Is it possible that the raw water would run from the sea strainer, through the gear and then to the water pump?? Does it make a difference which side is inlet and outlet?? |

The 2009 post regarding the cooling question for a Paragon Gear on an IH 264 was mine. I just registered as a member in hopes that someone could answer my question. Thanks. |

John, If the Paragon Gear you speak of is really a V-Drive unit, I can send you a Palmer diagram of the salt water cooling. David |

Thanks David, The gear is a Paragon reverse Gear HDF 4F 1377. It is not a V-Drive unit. I have the original service manual for Paragon hydraulic Reverse gears (Models HB HF & HJ and very little is mentioned about the cooling system. I have been contacted by someone local to my area who has a similar engine, and has offered to let me check out how it is set up. I've also got some engine cooling questions but need to refresh my notes before I post anything. Thanks again, john |

My engine seems clogged from the impeller pump to thru the outport. Can I simply use a drain auger to clear rust anf mineral deposits or might that do damage? |
