Anyone have info on The Tuttle Motor Co., specifically; did they make a four cylinder, flathead engine (no oil filter fitting). Have one in an old 'race car' with "Tuttle" cast into block and exhaust manifold.

Charley,
I have a few of the Tuttle catalogs, but none of them show a flat head four cylinder model. The catalogs are probably earlier than your engine.
My guess is that your engine is a Ford, Continental, or Hercules block that was marinized by Tuttle and sold as a marine engine. The manifold would have been one of the marine components and would have been made by Tuttle and therefore had their name cast into it.
Cady was a nearby engine manufacturer (the owners of the two companies were brothers-in-law) and did Ford converstions that they called CADY-FORD until Henry's lawyers made him stop.
If you provide a picture of the engine, or if you know the displacement or bore and stroke, we can probably identify what you have.

Do you recall seeing mention of yet another "Tuttle Co." in New England somewhere?Seems I saw mention of one- maybe in Boleys volumes.Hope Charlie will share a picture of his Tuttle motor.

I don't recall ever seeing any reference to another "Tuttle Co." other than the one in Canastota, NY. I also checked a few references including Boley's Volume II, and don't see anything.
I haven't heard back from Charley, if he can email a picture to me I will post it here.

The engine/car is not mine; I was researching it for a friend of mine. He is away for the next few days, upon his return I'll ask him to post a photo to this site.

Was it common to modify an existing engine style for marine use, or more common to manufacture a marine-specific product?
What were the basic mods required to change over from land to water use?
