This is a key puller I made a few years ago which works fairly well on smaller keys like a gib headed 1/4" assuming the gib is not all messed up.

On larger keys I always use a slide hammer and drill and tap the largest size I can in the key. I have found that a grade 5 piece of threaded rod cut so it is as short as possible works best. You want all of the energy from the slide to be transferred into the key and not stretching the threaded rod!key puller
