Mark,

It as 2 1/2 HP Blaxland. They are quite a nice little engine. Your best bet for parts is to find another one as there are quite a few around.

Cheers,

Mark

Perhaps a bit more detail pls... clearly Chapman, but looks a bit more industrial than marine? Can anyone explain plus explain the vee gorrve arrangements? Also the cast lug on the 'head'.

Couple more photos would help. I too wondered about the lug on the cylinder. It does look like a marine engine set up as a stationary engine.

what an amaazing Spark Plug! I'd love to see a close up of it!? Is there any writing on it?
I have a picture of a similar model engine as a portable water pump/engine, i think it was an original unit by Chapman[ but without the cylinder head lug, and the more common mag drive & flywheel] . My point being that maybe there were a few non-marine Chapmans!?

Did chapman make an engine like this? It looks like the cylinder is cast with the top half of the crankcase.

NOt sure but Yes the cylinder and top half of the crank case are cast in one.
If any one has a carbie bowl lid I'm happy to make use of it
Also did these engines have the water flowing through the exhaust? Mark

The 2.5 and 3 HP had a single casting for the head + cylinder + top-half crankcase.
The stationary Chapman / Blaxland pic i have shows a wet exhaust and driving a grear type pump? splitdorf spark plug huh! I'll look on ebay thanks mark!
Chapman/ Blaxland pump
Oh Wow!; I just noticed in the pic there is a BR emblem on the baseplate!;,, this means Blaxland Rae. The same emblem is on some of the carbies too.

Thanks,Gregoryan, So they made these as stationary s as well,
Can these engines run on a dry exhaust with out any problems.
Going on the magneto and gear and maybe the spark plug that came with the engine, my engine maybe a very early one?
I'm chasing a carbie lid if you know were I can get one! Mark

This engine is a Chapman Pup. It is too old to be a Blaxland, which came into existance in 1938. And, as far as I know, always had a detachable cylinder barrel.

The bevel drive magneto indicates that the engine was made between 1926, first year of the Pup, and 1930. I do not have enough photos to pinpoint the change from bevel drive to skew drive. It may have been before 1930.

Chapman engines certainly were used for stationary purposes, and were advertised as such, including kerosene versions.

The lug on the cylinder is a mystery, as is the carburettor. I had not seen one like that, but I have not seen a lot of Chapman engines, living well inland as I do.

The 1936 ad below shows a Pup driving a generator. There was also the Model A for stationary use with a direct drive magneto. The direct drive magneto was also used on the Export model. The Standard having the vertical magneto. Then there was the Deluxe Standard, somewhat of a contradiction in terms.

Splitdorf spark plugs had mica insulators, not uncommon in the old days. They were different because of the green jacket that covered the mica.

I always imagined that the water going through the exhaust muffler was to cool it for the comfort of the passengers. A dry exhaust will not hurt the engine.

Eric

Thanks,Eric. Going on the engine Ad that you attached, it has the same carbie as mine and going by the magneto and spark plug, the years you mentioned would be pretty much right, Now it's just time for me to collect a few parts for it and make a display together, thanks, Mark
