Am looking for an E20 pump. Please let me know if you have one lurking at the back of your "discontinued spares" shelf.

Jim I have a couple back in my winter storage unit. Both would need rebuilds I am sure. They started leaking from the bleed hole underneath. The shafts are no longer available so rebuilds are tuff unless you have shafts made. I won't be back to that unit until mid may.

I switched to a pump sold by Moyer marine. Don Moyer is a great guy and has been very helpful even though we don't run an atomic 4. I have purchased all of our engine accessories from them. (carb alternator fresh water cooling etc) they will make a new pump shaft for their pump and supply an adapter plate to the Palmer. They only issue with the pump I have had is the shaft seemed to wear fast. Don supplied replacement at no charge. He mentioned using a harder steel on the new ones I think.

Hope this helps
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the note.

Have purchased a few things from Don for our P60 but never thought to ask
him about a water pump. We've just rebuilt our Palmer from top to bottom
(see picture). The Sherwood, however, is dripping the same as yours. Have
held off pulling it apart until I had a known good spare in hand. Always
good to have a back-up.

There is a major rebuild kit available from a pump shop in FL which
includes the lip seals & bearings but not the shaft or cover plate.

Thanks again & appreciate your keeping me in mind when you're next in the
storage unit.

Wow that is best looking Palmer I have seen. We just did a complete rebuild about 1400 hours ago. We bring the boat south every winter so engine hours add up fast. I will need a reminder to look for the pumps.

Let me know if your reverse gear stays drip free from the tail shaft. That is the one thing I have not been able to solve. The shaft is grooved a bit.

The engine is for our Marshall 22. Bought the boat last year and we've been going through everything to bring her back to new condition. Since engine work makes for a good winter project we tore the P60 down to it's elemental pieces & rebuilt it 100%. Re-bored .020" over, new pistons, rings, bearings, valves, seats, springs, rebuilt starter, alternator & distributor. We looked at replacing the engine with an A4 but decided to stay with what she had. Engine is perfectly good so why change? Picked up a couple of spare manifolds just in case but the one she has seems fine. The manifolds were patterned with plenty of iron so we should be good on that front.

We have no tailshaft leaks but the transmission looks to have been rebuilt at some point. Double check that your oil level is below the shaft by an inch or so. That may help with the drip for now. For that score in the shaft at the seal, you can have a layer of steel welded on then turned down to the proper diameter. Either that or keep an eye on ebay for another unit... they come up for auction every now & then.

Cheers!

Mrs. Stone writes an excellent log!

I see you are on your way up now through the ditch. When you get up toward the Long Island Sound area, drop me a note. Am on the CT River in Essex. Don't know if the moorings will be set by the time you arrive but certainly we'll be able find some dock space for you. Will treat the intrepid travelers to some adult refreshments at our local spot & discuss the subtle points of Palmer engine nursing & etc.

I broke the housing for the water/pump distributor. Does any have this part to sell me?

The Moyer pump is one of their MMI pumps, shaft driven. Call and talk to Don Moyer he will know about their conversion and pricing. I have been unable to putmyhands on our old Sherwood's.

Thanks Kevin. I got the major re-build kit and overhauled the pump we have. Am still looking for a spare... one will show up sometime.

Cheers!
