This will probably be the first of many sabb-related yelps for help! I'm about to start getting an old North Isles Yole ready for sea. it's evidently been a workhorse in its time but appears to be seaworthy. She has been fitted with a Sabb single cyl short stroke (H I think?) & matching VP drive. engine seems in reasonable condition, turns over on the hand crank and I can feel a bit of resistance with compression on. I note that there is a Bosch dynastarter AND an alternator harnessed up, which tells a story. Ive got the dynastarter off the lump and in a testing jig. In start mode, the dynastart spins up lovely with loads of torque. so I think that part of it is OK. however when I spin the dynastarter at 3000rpm, I get only 0.8-1V output on D+ with everything open circuit. This drops to 0.2V when I ground DF. Ive tried flashing the field which got the original 0.8V up to 1V does this mean the exciter coils have shorted? I see 4 Ohms from DF to ground are there any other tricks to try? |
