Here are some shots of a transmission, I found in a junk pile last week.

There are no markings or ID marks, but it looks typical of transmissions used in "our" style of boats / engines.

These two pictures are close ups, and you can see the inner and outer rings or shells that slide when the transmission is in neutral or reverse.
When engaged in forward, the fingers bear on the inner ring, expanding it enough to "grab" the outer ring, thus transmitting the torque from the front input shaft to rear shaft.
The posts that hold the two fingers take the torque and are about 1/2 in thick and about 1 1/8 in wide. I wonder what the bending moment on the posts are - say a 10 HP motor at 750 rpm - torque is about 400 ft-lbs.

Nice find. I've got a couple of Gies Gears and the odd Joe's Gear found like that. There are fewer of those good old "junk piles" every year! One of the Gies Gears came from an old boy who never took a bath and had over 500 tons of scrap on his property when he died. When the property was cleared they brought in the magnet crane and pulled stuff two or three feet out of the ground! Oh, and he had about $150,000. in cash in the safe in the basement too. Didn't trust banks. Weird huh?! ;-)

I believe this is a Model 'C' Michigan but what the heck do I know. The heavy band is bronze so these would look quite fetching all cleaned up. They look like they were designed for a specific brand of engine, is that true?

Hey Robert, any chance of you sending me a private email about your stash of transmissions?
