* B.F.Brown was a turn of the century inventor and mfgr in Hannibal,Mo. I believe he moved to Syracuse,N.Y in 1904 and began mfging marine engines, the company incorporated in 1909 as B.F.Brown Gas Engine Co., moved to schenectedy,N.Y in 1910,as part of the Levi Case Co.its last of production was 1913 ca. Not a lot is known of this rather colorful man, and very few of his engines survived. This article written in 1921 is both interseting and informative-- Hope you get a kick out of it ! * |

Wonder how the term "Self Starting" applies. Note the 1909 ad is a 3 port and the 1911 three cylinder is a 2 port. |

* Self Starting ? Engines with make and break or magneto fired ignitions always requires the engine to be rotated to start, with a timer, battery, coil, and spark plug ignition system under ideal conditions-- warm engine, firing piston just past top dead center, proper prime etc-- a flick of the timer would fire that piston enough to rotate and start the engine ??? AT 6:00 a.m. in a dark, wet, cold marina I don't think the Term Self Starting applied ! At the boat shows of yore engines were set up to demonstrate reversing on the spark and self starting ! About the two port and three port engines in the ad, we really don't yet know enough about B F Brown engines to know what they offered ? Ad says 13 sizes that could be a wide variety ?? * |
