There is a Fairbanks Morse on the block at a local auction. It is a single cylinder horizontal gas engine. It appears complete, is dirty but not rusty and turns easily and smoothly but has no compression. Would $100.00 be too much to go? |

Could be a busted cylinder = lawn ornament. That's about as bad as it could get. But sleeving the cylinder wold certainly fix that. Otherwise it is simpler repair - eg new rings. If it has a tag, you're ahead of the game. You'll likely get $100 for scrap so you've got small risk. miro |

It has a tag. I'm going to take a closer look today. I don't do "lawn ornaments". I think that is an insult to fine old machinery. I'll post more info when I get back.---Matt |

If it's been sitting for years it's possible the rings are dry and tight. Something a little penetrating oil could solve. Sounds like a farm engine. Is it hopper cooled? |

It is hopper cooled and it does look like a farm engine. It is covered with grease, grime and oil but no rust. I would say it has been out of the weather for years. The tag says: "Z" in a very large letter, 2HP, 600rpm. It has a type R Fairbanks Morse magneto. I'm going to try to snag it for $100.00 or less. |

Matt, if the magneto works, it alone is worth between $100 and $150. If the motor is complete, without seeing it, I would say at least $300 and probably more. |

the worst about no compression I have worked on a few and 90% of the time compression issues are caused by the valves in these. Could also be a blown head gaskate or dry rings. Parts are redily available both new and used. The one ones with the type R mag are older (mine thats pictured is a 1929)so even if you have to find a new block its worth it. One thing about the mag if it has no spark then check the points as they are often dirty on the Type R mag. Also the type R mags armature tends to gum up with tar so take the mag off the engine an clean it but DO NOT remove the armature from the mag as it will kill your magnet. They are good running and easy to start little engines though they run fast and hot. |

That first part should read: "Does it look sort of like this? Before you think the worst about no compression I have worked on a few and 90% of the time compression issues are caused by the valves in these."
