Hello Gents.......I purchased a 1959 28' Olsen over the off season and it is equiped with a v8 palmer....any info and/or pointers on this motor would be appreciated...I have to wait until spring to get model numbers etc. I was informed that this current motor is a repower...and that the boat left the olsen boat works in 1959 with a palmer 6 cylinder...the current v8 has a closed cooling system also..well thats about it.once again thanks in advance......Matt i have attempted to upload a pic of said motorpalmer 8 cylinder

Matt,
It looks like a Palmer IH 345 cu in. The engine is an International Truck block that Palmer marinized. Engine parts should be available from your International (Navistar) truck dealer. You say yours is Fresh water cooled so it should be trouble free.
Have fun with it
Ernie

A word of caution Ernie and Matt. Make sure the fresh water cooling loop includes not only the cylinder block but the exhaust manifolds and the risers. Too many cut corners and didn't include the exhaust manfolds and they are the difficult item to find. The risers are easy enough to make using wrought (not cast brass) copper fittings and copper pipe. As Ernie said this engine should last a long time with routine maintenance.

Hello Richard.....thanks for the heads up on the riser and maniflod situation....Im not sure if my cooling loop does include these...I will add it to my list of things to check out...the cooling system on this motor consists of a heat exchanger and has an external loop of pipe that runs externally along side the keel for about 6 foot i suppose. I spoke with the fellow(Mr. Olsen) whos father built the boat in 1959..The Olsen boat works is still going strong out there in Key Port New Jersey..he said that the v8 and heat exchanger set up was a later owners add on as the boat left the shop originally with a palmer 6...I know that exhaust manifolds were one of the hardest items to find for my gray engines..and that osco and barr even stopped manufacturing the after markets......I always stock up on spare parts for whatever motor im running.....so i guess its time to start collecting IH/Palmer gear....oh my wife will be so happy..lol...Matt.....Any recomendations as to where to purchase a full service manual for this motor? I have uploaded a pic of the boat that the motor is inThe Olsen

Matt,

The boat looks great!

We sell the Palmer 345 manual together with the IH manual here on the MarineEngine.com site.

The Palmer manual is more of an "owner's operators" manual than a service manual. They didn't produce a true service manual. The IH manual is more of a "service" manual but it is not specific to marine. With the two you pretty much have it covered.

Thanks Eddie...i still have projects to complete...but for a 51 year old boat she is in great shape.....the Palmer motor is a repower in1973 but I took Andrews advice and bought the manual...SMART move...everything i need to know is in there......This boat worked for 45 years as a charter fishing boat out of Merinac Long Island....She now enjoys a life of lesiure....cruising lake Erie and taking care of her new family.........peace Matt

Heard this boat is taking up space in a yard and they need to get rid of it quickly. It looks great in 2010 - history is not exactly right but my Dad owned it late 1960's until 2005 +/-. He realized he would not get around to doing what was needed to keep her in great shape. Congratulations on a spectacular restoration.
