Hi,
Slight urgent question or two here and apologies for the lack of introduction....
We have an old sabb diesel on our narrowboat, two pots and 18hp. I will post proper details as soon as I'm home.
All was well today for about half a mile, then propulsion was almost lost. The prop turns but hardly any power is felt.
Cruising has been all but halted.
Would anybody possibly know much about these engines and what might be at fault.
All has been fine and we've just completed a 28 mile run with no problems.
I am not afraid to tackle repairs but am confused as to what has happened. There doesn't seem to be any obstructions or obvious reason for the problem.
Unfortunately I cannot seem to find any workshop manuals or anything would help me understand the engine and gearbox setup?
Sadly we are now stranded awkwardly for the time being.
Any help with my problems would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Jim

Sounds like you have a Sabb 2H OR 2G. Put the clutch in gear and hand turn the flywheel with someone holding the prop coupling with a channel lock pliers. if the engine turns, the clutch needs to be adjusted. The manual says every year- I do it maybe every 3 years. Look through this website, I did an article with pictures on clutch adjustments and replacing the holding plate with STEEL -( not SS) self-locking nuts.
Owners manuals are available - try Sabb America- Bill Miller.

Hi and thanks for the help.
I have checked everything that I could look at and still nothing has improved.
I checked the flywheel as suggested and it locks quite solidly when put into gear. I was hoping that it would be a simple problem.
Do you think this is just an adjustment problem?
We have now stopped until we can fix the problem.
It's a Sabb 2H SP 18hp model 1973 (I think is the year)
Regards,
Jim

With the engine running- say @ 1200 RPM, you feather the prop to either full reverse or forward, you engage the clutch, does the drive shaft look like it is spinning at 1200 RPM.
If Yes- then you have a prop problem ( which I doubt)
If no, then you have a clutch adjustment.

Let me know the answer and I will send some more info.

I have the two manuals you need but the file size is too large- we are limited to 150K. I will try to email them to you directly and also compress them for this site ( a technical step I have no experience)

You might also do a search on this site- under "clutch" AND " "sabb" take a look at this one.

There are several UK Sabb owners- Guy Dickinson has been helpful = [email protected]

Hi Jim,
Thank you for the help and for the email.
Now that I can see the internals properly I am going work my way from the gearbox back to try and find what is wrong.
I will report back as soon as possible.
Cheers,
Jim

Sabb clutch.
I assume you got the manuals I sent to your company. (I could not figure out how to post them here). IF the clutch adjustment is the problem, you should see it immediately when the prop shaft is forward or reverse full and shaft is not turning at the same speed as the engine.
I did a write up for this web site on Sabb clutch adjustment- I have not yet found it. The main point of the write up is not start the job until first getting a 15-20" long shaft with fingers and another with a small magnet

Replace the nut and lock washer with self locking STEEL nuts. Do this job at the beginning of the day- I must have fished out steel nut 5-7 times.

The only wearable items is the flat disk , when new is .100 . I bought a new one but the old one with 30 years of service ( 6 months sitting saltwater) was .09 and works fine.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the manuals, without them I would not have found the problem.
The coupling for the prop shaft has lost both pinch bolts. I guess it was simple but one hole was full of muck and there may only have been one bolt holding it all together.
Also (I think) the pin that holds it in place may also have sheared but I must investigate further for this.
I just need to find out the bolt size so that we can at least start moving again.
Thanks again,
Jim

Shaft pinch bolts-
Never had that problem. But will check it when I put the engine back in. Do not forget do the clutch adjustment. I have had the clutch slipping and once one of nuts came loose and the bolt tore up the hand crank system. ( replaced the nuts with self locking steel nuts. ( not SS!)

Wow!!

I managed to get hold of two bolts and we have power again.
Or should I say we have more power than I've ever noticed before, now I can really rock the boat that's moored up behind me!
Thanks again for the help, the manuals have been really helpful.
Jim
