* Rochester,New York had 15 marine engine mfgrs listed by 1940, several were successors to earlier engine co.'s. In 1906 Frank Brownell an experienced manufacturer, teamed up with H.L.F Trebert an experienced engine designer and mfgr, to form the Brownell-Trebert Co. and mfgrd engines for marine, autos, trucks, tractors and industrial markets,by 1907 Brownell had bought out Treberts interests and became the F.A.Brownell Motor Co. In 1913 Brownell formed a new company The Rochester Motor Company and inturn sold his interests in 1919, this enterprise went on to mfgr the Dusenbergs. History chart Frank Alexander Brownell retired in his late 70's as Vice President of the East Side Savings Bank in Rochester ! And now as Paul Harvey would say "For the rest of the story ! In the late 1800's Frank A. Brownell was a camera inventor/designer and mfgrd most all of George Eastmans Kodak cameras in his mfging Company. he designed the "Brownie" and eastman put it on the market in 1900,Ironically though the camera was probably named for the most popular chidrens book characters "Brownies" imaginary sprites by illustrater/author Palmer Cox, Kodak sold 100,000 in first year, it was the poor mans first chance at owning a camera ! In 1902 Brownell sold his Company to Eastman Kodak and you know the rest ! * |
