I over heated my Perkins 4.108 yesterday. Long story short when I was idling it to cool. I was infact making it worse as the coolant had leaked out. There were no scary sounds, she just petered out. Now she won't start. She turns over, she has fuel (I bled the lines just in case), she has coolant and the coolant leak fixed, but doesn't seem to manage enough compression to start up. The oil looks ok (not milky), and the coolant level is maintaining. What should I do next? If I had blown the head gasket wouldn't there be some kind of sign? |

Sorry to be late here. I would suggest removing the injectors from the head, reconnect the injector high pressure lines with the injector in such a position that you can see the spray. Then try the starter and watch the spray pattern. I think they have pintle nozzles so spray should be very fine in all directions. If solid the injector has seized and needs professional attention to dismantle, free up maybe, reassemble and test. You need an injector tester to do this. Keep well clear of the injectors when testing in the open as the spray will easily penetrate the skin and cause a few problems. |

I had the same problem with a Perkins 4.107. The coolant water became a sludgy coffee colour. But this turned out to be dislodged calcium and rust build-up. I think the motor had never been over 150F before and the overheating (due to racing) gave it an internal steam clean. The starting problem was due to a blocked fuel pickup. She had sat for 10 years. Now that the winter is coming the engine is getting harder to start. It has no glowplugs. But a short spray of "Start-y-bastard spray" into the airfilter does the trick. |
