Hi, I'm researching on behalf of a friend who has just bought a lovely old boat from the 1920s with a Perkins 6 cylinder from, we believe, the 1950s. What looks like the engine number is C0280106. The pics are here. I need to find the engine model so I can find the part numbers for the flywheel gear ring and the starter motor geared drive - both have been chewed up by mismatched gears!
Any help most gratefully received

I could not get the pictures. If you have a verticle injector pump it would be a 354. The starter should have its own tag on it. In the late 50's perkins made other 6 cylinder engines with shorter strokes and they show up occasionly. |

Thanks for your help Larry. I thought a link to a separate web page would be easier, but I've now attached the following images:
Numbers on the side of the engine read 'C0280106' (centre right) and '3 GKN 1156' (top left) and a 'P 13' with possibly a 6 to the right of the P13 (top centre)..
Number on top of cylinder head between 1st and 2nd injector here reads '8858' and a '(unknown character) 9 0 (or C) 005' between 2nd and 3rd injector..

Well it don't look like the 354's that i have. One trick some guys are useing on diesels is to get the numbers off the injector pump and asking a pump repair place what engine it is. The pump repair places all have a large book with all the injector pumps listed with how they should be set for each engine. None of your pictures show the pump, i am guessing its not verticle mounted. |

The numbers you show are all casting numbers. If you can't find a key to them its hard to use them to ID a particular engine. You should look for the serial number. Its normally near the base of the injector pump on a flat surface. There is a perkins site with alot of the serial numbers for engines posted on the web. Unfortuneatly it does not go back to the old stuff. |

Many thanks for all your help. My friend (who owns the boat) in my absence found another fire damaged boat with a P6, called the owners and they'd had 3 engines donated to the restoration, so one was split for parts and Bob's your uncle..
So thanks once again and, for now, it's "Case closed"

Martin, Thats a P6 and the starter chews out the ring gear when the contacters inside get bad. The armature spins slowly and engages the pinion on -12 volts, when it is drawn fully out then the full voltage hits it and cranks over. Called an AXIAL starter. When the contacters burn the full voltage goes trait to the coils and the armature spins too fast to engage. |
