Here is a four cylinder, 4 cycle, make and break, with open crank. Given all the things that were in motion, must have been some fun watching one of these things run.

Hall was a very respected early marine engine mfgr, before 1911 They were known as Hall Brothers Gas engine Works and mfgd engines as early as 1897, also the first gasoline engines picked by Us Navy in 1901--
This 1906 ad sums it up !

The old Hall Bros. Gas Engine Works Factory building at 11th & Mifflin St. Philadelphia still exists today.
I just did a Google Earth & maps search.
Did this Hall Bros. Engine Works later become Hall-Scott engine Co ?
Are any Philadelphia Hall Bros. Engine Works engines known to still exist today ?
Are there any photos of a Hall Bros. engine ?

I think I took these photos in 2001. The engine belonged to a stationary engine collector in New Jersey.

Andrew, Thanks for the photos first time I've
seen this engine ! Can't quite read the tag, can see Hall and Engine cant see any other words ? side plate has strap metal across it ?
I have 6 Hall marine eng Co.'s listed all in different cities and states is any other info available on original photos ?

Seems that I didn't get a closeup photo of the tag. The one I have posted above is already zoomed in. I don't have anything better. I think I can make out:
HALL
GAS ENGINES
PHILADELPHIA
I looked for other notes on this engine but I don't have anything. The engine was for sale at the time I looked at it. |
