We have a Palmer Bros. Engine Model ZR1, Serial No. 2276026. It is fully restored and in very good condition. We would like to know what this engine is worth. |

Your ZR-1 was made in 1926. They were made from 1925 until 1962. I have records of 37 known ZR-1 in collections or museum. They are a very reliable easy to start marine engine. They have one drawback which is they weigh 425 pounds and take a substantial mounting base to permit safe operation at shows etc. Like all large single cylinder two strokes they also stress the hull significantly so be prepared to obtain a heavy hull. When you say restored and very good condition has this engine been operated in salt or fresh water. That is critical as salt water engines which have been allowed to dry out in their water jackets are subject to serious cracking and destruction. Only heating to high temps under controlled conditions can deal with the salt in the iron. No dipping or acid will do anything but destroy the water jackets. Is the engine complete without modifications?? Best I can suggest!!!! My guess is you would be luck to get $500.00. |

Sorry for the poorly worded note on two strokes. The ZR-1 is obviously a four stroke but even with its counterbalanced crankshaft Palmer rated it to a upper limit of 500-700 RPM in the single cylinder version due to the stress on a planked hull. In the multiple cylinder ZR versions it was rated at 600-800 RPM. |
