From the former colonial power!- I am rebuilding (slowly) a former 1905 UK Admiralty steam pinnace. The steam plant was removed in 1924 and replaced by a small Universal i/c engine, but her registration documents show that on the 5th February 1930 she was fitted with a six cylinder Gray, model and serial no not specified. Does the above model and serial no relate to a unit from that date? When rescued from a canal, this Gray was still installed, though it had been underwater for some time. I have now established that the vessel itself is one of the few remaining Dunkirk Little Ships which took part in the evacuation of the British Army from Dunkirk in May /June 1940. If the engine was the one installed in 1940 it has considerable historical and heritage significance here in the UK (though I appreciate not so much in the US) and I would attempt to restore it. Any guidance will be most welcome. |
