Whats the easy way to start my Mianus two cycle? Spark advance settings, etc. After a few cranks over TDC my arm is about to fall off. How did the Old Timers do it? |

John, Go to technical and download Tips. Don't crank your guts out is the name of the game. Slightly retard spark. Prime the engine with fuel mix leave priming cup open until you get first first firing then close the priming cups and rock the flywheel up against compression it should fire and take off. READ TIPS. |

Thanks Mr. Day. That explained it well. I`m mentally stuck in the four cycle engine mode and was trying to crank over TDC. where my ignitors were timed to fire. I will try "rocking against compression" this afternoon after I sweep out the shop. Splendid day out here in CT. Thanks John |

John, You are a very inovative guy this photo you sent today showing how you are breaking in your two cylinder Mianus is worthy of at least a couple of atta boys!! Now if I can just follow Andrews guide lines I will post it here for all to see.

A pleasant suprise to see it posted. Thanks Mr. Day. I gave it a hour or so of PTO breakin @ approx. 120 RPM today and it was noticably easier to turn over by hand after. In hindsight I probably should have used something besides 30 weight oil as a lube for this operation. Maybe after the weather warms up I`ll use some Marvel Mystery oil as a cylinder lube and give it some more time behind the Deere. The lighter lube shouldnt be so "thick" and make it easier(less drag)yet for the initial startup cranking. Any thoughts or suggestions or better substitutes as far as a "lite" lube are concerned for this break in and startup operation? |

Instinctivly I would avoid too thin oil but perhaps others may have a better feel for this process. Historically they used the same 30 weight as they used in the engine I believe. You should make sure that the shaft grease cups get a 1/2 turn at leas once each half hour. Keep checking the temperature of the shaft housings to make sure you don't run the babbit to hot. According to Stan Grayson the Arcdia men told him if the shaft journals got hot they would turn a garden hose on them to cool them down. Don't forget the finger tip test. |
