I have twin 283s. I just pulled off both generators to have them rebuilt. I'm being told that i should replace them with alternators.the person that is rebuilding the generators said that i could not replace them because of the mounting holes that then generators use. another person said that you can get brackets that would fit in the mounting holes and then you could put a alternator on if thats true where would one go to find brackets. these are 1961-62 gm 283 from a Owens concorde 30' please help if you can John B. |

I am working on the same engines and would like to no if they are raw water cooled and if so what maifolds are on them. I am installing new Barr manifolds and the cooling flow will have to be changed do to the way flagship did it is hard to duplicate. Pictures of the cooling hose routing would be great. these engines have altenators, I could look at / photo what is there. email me at [email protected] |

Definitely DO throw the generators overboard and get delco marine alternators. (single wire). I made a standoff bracket and mounted mine on top of the original positions, steadied by an automotive slotted arm type adjustment strut. It works just fine, saves about 40 lbs total weight, and no more dead batteries. Get rid of all the old wiring, and voltage regulators. I'm running Barr/Osco type manifolds with a straight through raw water cooled set-up. This works OK, but the temp never gets above 110 degrees, so fuel economy suffers. I'd really like to see how the original thermostat controlled raw water system was routed. |
