Unfortunately there are a lot of scams out there.
One of the common ones involves an offer to buy what you are selling for "more" than the asking price. The seller is then asked to return a portion of the "overage" that will be the middleman's commission or whatever. What actually happens is that they send you a bum check for the high amount and then require you the refund the lesser amount by Western Union. They insist on your quick return of the excess. Well you guessed it... their check is no good and your Western Union payment is instant and connot be retrieved. This happens not just on the internet, but with newspaper classifieds too.
If the offers seems odd or suspect it probably is.
If the initial email seems "canned" where your engine info is just inserted into a form letter then it is highly suspect.
A lot of the scams and bogus offers seem to come from african countries, but they can be from anywhere. |

That would work, but it would limit the effectiveness of the classifieds. People would say "why do I have to register just to respond to an ad?".
I have tried reporting them to their ISP, they usually use hotmail, yahoo, juno or one of the many free services, but they expect that and probably register for ten or twenty new email accounts per day.
As I mentioned it happens with newspaper classifieds too, they call on the phone and pitch the same story.
