I recently came across a single cylinder two stroke engine on a rail inspection car. The car appears to have been custom built by the mining concern who used it. The engine looks very much like an old marine inboard two stroke. It is cast iron with a brass dome shaped water jacket and bronze bevel gear drive water pump. The card is also bronze and has the name Schroebler(spelling?). The only identifying mark is a capital R cast into what looks like inspection holes on either side of the crankcase. Any help would be appreciated in identifying the engine. I will have pictures as soon as I get them developed. Jim |

Jim ...I just tried to get your profile up to see where you are from...still dont know.
However if you are in Australia or better still West Australia I may know the answer to your question.The West Australian Govt Railways made an engine ,a single cylinder ,water cooled two stroke called a" Groper '' .It was used to power the railway inspection trolleys. There are still some of these engines around owned by members of our club . In fact all the patterns for the engine are held by us . Your photo will help ..but i will inquire about the letter R cast into the side of the crankcase inspection covers . Just on your description the engine sounds very much like a ''Groper''. |
