Had a carburetor with a bad float; rebuilt the carb; engine seems to run smooth/perfect (3500 RPM no problem) until you put it under load where I can only get 1500 RPM. Checked compression, fuel flow, spark and all appear good. Messed with the main fuel flow valve on the carb - seems ok. It ran great before I had the float issue & now I'm stumped. Ideas? |

Jean, Our P-60 with a 2-blade, 9x12 prop maxed-out at 1500 rpm under load (pushing a 22-foot catboat at ~6kts), so this may not be unusual. What did your rpm peak at before the rebuild? |

I have a 3 blade prop on our Palmer. Cruising rpms are 1800-2000, I get about 6 knots from that. |

Just an addition to this post. We are currently having a loss of rpm also. With Dick Days help we feel we have narrowed it down to the reverse gear. |

Well after a thorough going over of his reverse gear we did find his brake band was much too tight and while that was easily cured the problem didn't go away.
I came to the conclusion Kevin must have engine problems as the OXKB reverse gear really has no drag on the engine in forward unless the stern bearing is a problem and he replaced that. No change Kevin found the problem was the fuel pump battery lead as I understand it was barely connected to the battery source. Once he cured that the problem went away. Just glad he worked his way through the problem. Must have been a lot of sweat in narrow bilges!!! |
