* Great ad, I have never seen any info on an air cooled Palmer! The Mianus address would date the ad to late 1890's? * |

Cos Cob opened in 01 as the Palmer Boat Shop The Mianus location must have been completly moved to Cos Cob by 1905 as that is when the dam built by the New Haven Railroad was completed. That dam eliminated the Palmer dam at Mianus. For more info use the search function and put in "Palmer upper works" and then in the keywords box select "and" (match all keywords) Dick has a small amount of info on an air cooled outboard.

According to my records they moved the boat shop to Cos Cob in 1901 as Ernie says. They moved the machine shop in 1907 with the completion of the move from the upper works in 1910. I will dig out some pictures of their air cooled bicyle motors which appear as I remember in 1901. Henry Zerbarini (Palmer Bros. 1922-1968) Told me by 1920 Ray Palmer who was the engineer was no longer active in the plant operation. He came to work every day and just did projects he enjoyed. One of his projects was to make 6 or 8 outboard motors useing the 1901 bicycle engines. They were set up so the engine shaft drove a long propeller shaft extended aft of the transom. He gave them to local friends. They were not for sale, Back about 1993 I bought a Palmer Bros. unit missing its electric motor which was a prop on the end of a 30" shaft. Their 1935 Cider Mill catalog shows it was made for churning apple butter in large vats. On of the little known aspects of Palmer Bros. is they made Cider presses and all sorts of vinegar production items for making industrial quantities of vinegar. The seller thought it was a Palmer outboard motor as it has a Palmer brass tag as the maker. |

Here are a couple of pages from a ca 1901 Palmer catalog. Sorry the quality isn't better but Zerox of Zerox has its limits. Now you know as much as I know about Palmer's Bicycle engines. |
