Hi All, I acquired this Harley engine from the estate of an elderly gentleman who took it out of a boat. It had been belt driven to the prop shaft. It had been started with bicycle chain and a double hand crank (which has gone missing over the years). The serial # is very clear and is 495 BA and could possible be dated to 1908. Has anyone ever heard of Harley adapting their motorcycle engines for marine use or is this just someone being very creative?? Phil |

I think Harley would sell their motors for any use, however, if it was meant for marine use from the beginning, I would assume it would have a cheaper marine carburetor on it. I would be willing to trade you the more correct Schebler Model D for the one on the Harley. Here is a picture of my 1912 Wagner, it's the only Minnesota made motorcycle engine I have been able to afford.

Intriguing patent by Cameron Waterman #851,389 dated April 1907 shows motorcycle engine adapted to chain driven boat propellor.Protype development attributed to using a Glenn Curtiss motorcycle engine. (Curtiss engine appears simular to Harley engine in configuration.) Patent and information from Arlan Carter's new 2010 book: The American Rowboat motor Published by Fall Creek Trading Co., Fall Creek WI. |

Hi Bill, I have a deal going on the harley engine with a guy here in ontario that would include the carb that is on it, if it falls through I'll let you know. Hi Bruce, I do have Arlan Carter's book I'll look for the reference, thanks for the info. Phil |
