My early sixties Fireball AMC 327 with single Rochester downdraft carb cranks easily and starts sort of OK (with ether) the first time and runs well but is very hard to restart after shutdown for a few minutes. It cranks hard/slow and "feels" like the cylinders may be full of ...... fuel?

I put in a fresh battery with same prob.

Before I go back and pull plugs and crank and see what squirts out, or pull the starter .... or...???

I thought I should "ask the experts."

Thanks for any experiences, insights, speculation

Two things come to mind, Have your stater rebuildt as it sounds like it is binding ant the other is, is the engine getting enough water. Check the water pump and replace the impeller to be on the safe side.

Thanks Frank
Just found the prob - with the skipper. I thought the battery switch was in the "both" position; turns out it was in the "2" position, which connected my 7 year old series 24 batter when I switched this am to "both"and ran my usual tests things are fine. Time for a new back up battery. Lot simpler than rebuilding a starter. But thanks for the reminder on the pump impeller; that needs checking too.

Gene
