I'm currently rebuilding a M-304 for a customer. The Engine was brought to me with no heads, oil pan, or timing cover. The crankshaft gear was left on. My question is, I would like to replace the timing gears. A set of replacement gears for a non marine IH304 are cut the opposite was. Will these work or are the gears specific to this Palmer engine? |

I don't know anything about this particular engine, but it sounds like you are dealing with a two gear drive, helical gears. Check the engine rotation, it may be reverse of a standard engine, the opposite cut would be to keep the cam thrusting in the same direction. If this is the case the distributor gears would be reverse cut to turn the oil pump in the proper direction, starter would be reverse rotation also. |
