I have a 30's era Joe's gearbox behind a 40 merc flathead. The original information on the gearbox calls for cylinder oil as a lubricant. The only refernce to 'cylinder oil' I find is for a high viscosity oil for steam engines. The question is - what is the proper lubricant for the gearbox. tks. dmm |

I think steam cylinder oil would be too heavy - it's about SAE 600 Something more like SAE 50 60 is what you'd like to have. The oil is there to provide lubrication when you engage reverse and when the transmission is in neutral. In FWD, the whole internal works rotate so the only thing that needs oil are the bearlings. But it's more important that the oil is clean. miro |

Tks Miro. The mechanic who tested the gearbox understands how fwd, neutral and reverse work. He filled the box with 10-30 Shaeffer motor oil. I'm concerned the viscosity may be to low and that reverse will not function properly. I read where others had problems due to low viscosity oil but none of the information referenced an appropriate viscosity. Don |

Gear oil is what you need, such as differentials are filled with. |
