Now that the discussion mentioned transfer port, is that the same as the backfire port, area under the round cover? If so, is it supposed to have some sort of spring actuated valve to prevent backfire through the carb? When i got my engine the cover was missing so I made a pattern and had one cast. The cutaway picture in Old Lungers and Early Marine Engines shows something inside of the backfire port but I can not make out what it is. Is there something that is missing. Thanks Frank |

mine has the cover but it only bolt to the case doesent seem to have any machineing to have any thing else
i jsut saying what mine is right or wrong i have no idea

The transfer port is the channel on side of the cylinder, it transfers the fuel-air mix from the crankcase to the cylinder, it'usually on the opposite side of the exhaust. Some transfer ports had tubes or screens in them to prevent backfire. |

Just located a parts list for the "U" and it shows a screen that fits under the By-Pass Cover to prevent backfire. |
