I inherited a Regal Gasoline Engine from my father. It is a double fly-wheel, single cylinder upright engine approximately 5 horsepower. On the side of the cylinder is a brass tag that reads: "Regal Gasoline Engine Co. Manufacturers, Coldwater, Michigan USA #4261." My father collected antique agricultural engines and tractors. Does anybody know anything about Regal agricultural engines or were they all marine? Thanks. Appreciate any info. Drew |

Drew,
Can you post a picture of it or send it to one of us to post here? Regal did build some stationary upright engines (as did many marine engine builders). Usually they would use two flywheels of larger diameter than the marine, they would mount the engine on a cast base, often eliminate the water pump and use convenction cooling with a tank, and often use a flywheel governor.
Yours could be one of those, we could probably tell pretty quick from a photo. |

Nice old stationary farm engine. C.H. Wendel American engine volume one book states that the company was originally called Shuger's gasoline Engine Works from Coldwater, Michigan then about 1901 for some un-known reason they changed their name to Regal Gasoline Engine Co. They made stationary and marine engines one, two and four cylinders ranging from 3 to 24 horse power. Heavy duty marine engines could be secured in several models ranging from 5 to 45 horse power. Volume two book states that it appears most of the vertical Regals were shipped to Australia and is a mystery why.
There are few collectors that have stationary Regals on Harry's antique engine forum. They may be able to help you with literature or more information about your engine. |
