Further to George Forest's comments about engines with boats attached, I have come across a small tug with a rather nice 8L3 Gardner (152 hp at 900 rpm). I am will send some pix shortly. It runs well, but has a few issues that need ironing out. When one gets to over half a century, it comes to us all and with owners who ignore the basics, problems compound.
The immediate problems will be mainly the seals round the cylinder sleeves and the reduction box. At least everything is simple if heavy engineering. The hull is another problem in itself but all things can be fixed and I have been boating all my life.
I know there are several Gardner websites and have checked. Parts are getting very problematic.
Does anybody have any literature on the engine?

Woops, sorry. I've been a bit preoccupied with things and haven't looked at this for a while.
Raymond, the boat is Glyn Bird and I did buy her. Refloated her and sorted out a lot of things and rebuilt the gearbox with new reduction gears which I had cut. New bearings etc. I chronicled a lot of it in my site www.tugboats.co.nz. You must be a local, because Sea Bee also had an 8L3 I think. Matiu had an Atlas Imperial (sigh -I'd like one of those) and then a 6/71 noise maker. She has just bee sold by John Hager and is up North.

Russell, Any Vivians still running out there, or elsewhere that you're aware of? Any sources of parts (hulks etc.)?

For engine manuals try www.internalfire.com
If you register you can download manuals free of charge. They have a number of Gardner manuals on the site.

Hi guys, I am new to marine diesels so please bear with me. I am in the process of building a 55ft wooden trawler and I am at the moment looking at two remanufactured Gardner engines, 6L3B and 8LXB. Any thoughts or recommendations on its efficiency and longevity. Also where can I get either of these for a reasonable price.
