I have an oil leak coming from the seal at the drive shaft at the back of the trany on my M-60. When I first got the boat I had a mechanic look it over and I know it he over filled the transmission fluid. The leak is quite a bit lessened but would like like to have any advice on how to repair. Are parts available? Thanks Bill |

I'm assuming that the P-60 and M-60 are the same engine. If you have the Paragon OXB reversing gear (which is the typical setup for a P-60), the oil level is supposed to be an inch below the tail shaft as it exits the clutch pack. If the oil level is there, it is also well below the bearing at the back of the engine. Try lowering the oil level to the recommended level and see if it still leaks. If you aren't familiar with it, you have to remove the six bolts from the flat plate in back. You then suck out the excess oil like you would drain old engine oil. You should do this asap, because it is not good for the reversing gear to have it overfilled. Rich |

Thanks Rich, The tranny is paragon OXB and as far as I can tell m-60 and p-60 are the same. The fluid level is at the right level, and although the leak has lessened it is still may be leaking a little. I am taking her out next weekend for a thorough test. Thanks again for a fast reply. Bill |

It is simple to fix and you will find a lot of info on the files regarding how you remove the aft seal and replace it. Any leak is too much as the seal must be badly frayed in my opinion. You can get replacement seals and bearings at any auto parts dealer but don't talk Palmer. Take the the old bearing and seal and they will use the numbers off them to get a matching replacement. |

I am the current owner of this boat. My wife and I purchased Grace about 1.5 years ago. I just wanted to update this post for the archives. The transmission leak was caused by there being no gasket between the reverse gear and the motor. As always Dick Day was a big help. Kevin |

hello all, i recently adopted a geo. stadel pilot sloop with a palmer m-60 and a paragon oxk. i,m doing the engine until the temps warm a bit. my problem is that i fractured the bearing (1.5x2.438x.375) on the cone gear while heating it to remove it. as you all know it was made by paragon so there ain,t no mo'. i would be happy to buy one if anyone has one laying around (he said with fingers,toes and eyes crossed). my email is down below as you know. i've reading the board for the past months and love it, you guys have given me some education (especially you, mr. day.) |
