By the way, If anyone knows of a trans setup, like pictured, I need one for a three cylinder Ferro. |

Ferro engines were black. I had an origional Ferro Special like the one in the lower pic. I am quite sure it had never been run, much less painted.

Black.
In their 1909 literature Ferro says they used several priming coats, followed by a thorough rubbing with pumice stone to a perfectly smooth finish,over which several finishing coats are placed.
Another option, this is 1909 !

And in a 1910 Ferro booklet I have, on the last page, they state that "Ferro engines are painted with a high quality black paint" |

Miro,
J.B. Castagnos has a 2 cyl Lockwood with rear starter and it works quite well. But you
must put the timer in the correct position when starting or a trip to the hospital will result!
The rear starter eliminates reversing the engine on the timer too! |

Ferro engines were not designed to run backwards. If you look at most Ferro ads they show the engine with a reverse gear. A Ferro WILL run backwards. However it will not run as good. The crankshaft was offset about 10 deg so the connecting rod angle was less during the first part of the power stroke. Hence Ferro didn't care about it running backwards. The ratchet starter made perfect sense to them. |

Ernie, the engine I have with the crank is a 12hp Lockwood Ash. The crank is about a 2-1 reduction and makes cranking this large engine very easy. The timer is blocked to prevent reversing, the crank would spin wild in reverse. I can see where this would come in handy with the motor down deep in the hole, you could reach the crank and start it easily. |

I have come across a Ferro inboard motor that is not a "Special". It is a single cylinder, with a drip oiler, and a Kingston 5 ball carb. It also has the shaft geared timer just like Ferro Special. It has no other marking other than the Ferro cast in the cylinder. Has anyone ever seen one like this one I have?

In my opinion shipments to Africa should only be undertaken once the payment has been cleared through your bank. This is regretably necessay due to the large number of shipments made and payment never received. |
