I thought I would send you guys a pic of the engine I got on Ebay last week. I was a little worried when I actually received it, but it cleaned up really nice. So here is a before/after montage. I haven't started it, but I did check the compression and it was OK and close to even in all four cylinders. I'm sure I will have to adjust the valves and time it. The starter and generator both function. I have to get new piping for the oil cooler and I need two engine bed shoes for the two front mounts. I have bought some spec. and maintenance books on Ebay that should be here this weekend so I will know how to hook up and check everything. One thing is still wanting. I do not have a carburetor, and the part of the manifold that the carb bolted to is broken and gone, so I don't know what diameter intake hole it had. What was the stock carb that came on this 4-85? I am buying off EBAY, so if I cannot find the exact one, I will need some specs. The most important is the diameter of the barrel at the mounting flange?....1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2" or whatever. Is it likely that it will not even run or just run badly if I get a carb too big or too small? Gray was bought out by Teledyne. There is a 1 1/4" Teledyne carb on Ebay right now. I was curious if these were ever fitted to Grays. A lot of info and questions. I hope that is OK. I hope someone can help me. Mick Ridout [email protected] |

Michael Your engine will run just fine using any number of Zenith marine carburetors, but it has to be a marine carburetor. A marine carburetor has a tube that will suck up overflowing gasoline and keep it out of the bilge. The opening of a zenith marine carb is angled upwards to hold any overflow. A tractor or universal carb throat is horizontal. |

Looks Good! My father just purchased a 4-85 Gray but without a transmission. Do you know where he might source one? Any contacts you would be willing to share? This would be for his 1947 Lyman Islander 18' boat. |
