I have a 1969 25' Luhrs Sportfisherman with a single 225hp 318 chrysler(rebuilt 2000)new carb,fuel tanks,filters,water seperator,fuel shutoff valves.
Problem:
The boat gets up okay but just at point of plane 2700-3000 r.p.m's it bogs down like it is starving for fuel, pops and pings till the point of almost stalling until it is throttled down.
Idle's okay problem occurs when under heavy load.
Any ideas?

Jetting!
May I theorize, as I have never encountered the problem you relate, me using ordinary marine engines, ie, Keikhaufers, etc.

Suppose we assign a value of 100 to the resistance
of your boat in the water. Until it rises onto the
step or "planes" at which time the resistance falls to 70.

The engine demand to turn the properller at a given rpm is thereby reduced. Normal automobile carbs are not confronted with this "plane" effect. In the auto application more speed requires more power, fairly proportional. Well, rolling resistance is directly and wind resistance is according to the square of velocity, but basically at speeds we drive, it is proportional.

My conclusion is the reduced power demand on the engine, yet your desire to maintain propeller speed, "bumfuzzles" the carb jets and therefore, you need "marine" jetting.

Just a thought. I enjoy reading this board.

Johnny I think you allready nailed it.Your not getting enough fuel flow.Try to get a fuel preasure gauge plumed into the line before the carb and see if the preasure disappears when it acts up.

Sounds to me like you have a partially blocked fuel pick up in the fuel tank. I just corrected a similar problem on my 76 luhrs by replacing the strainers on the ends of the fuel pickups in both tanks. since doing that I have not experienced any problems.

I have 318's in my boat and had a problem like yours with the ping and pop. I replaced the vacumm advance springs under the plate in the distributor. It cost me $7.00 per kit. Good Luck

I have a 23 ft Uniflite with a 360 Chrysler. The engine was overheating so we replaced the marine manifolds as the old ones were about 15 years old. Since installing the new manifolds, I have no heating problems, but am unable to get the boat up pass 2100 RPM's. Have replace plugs, wiring, coil, balast resister, doist pick-up coil and checked the advance weights for free movement and good springs. Also, tried a different carb. Have good fuel flow. I can turn the prop shaft by hand and have put new packing in the shaft log. Anybody have any ideals before I pull the plug.

Sam,

You can also Chrysler category on the board at MarineEngine.com, . There might be more regulars that are familiar with the Chrysler 318.

This site is mostly for the older style one-lung engines...
