Helping out a friend, Where do you find the serial number on this engine? There is no Label plate. I am trying to get a date of build.

Does the flywheel have a gib key or the left hand Puller nut ?That change to left had puller nut took place 1922/23. Serial number brass tag in early years was mounted on forward face of cylinder. Later years next to the timer mounting. Water pump with built in check valves came on stream about 1919. Oil pump in early years was 1/8" pipe up through the crankcase. about 1920 changed to copper tubing to top of oiler site glass over intermediate gear.Very early oil pump was brass. Later units cast iron. NR was normally timed for left hand meaning counter clockwise facing the flywheel. Compression relief should be pulled forward as soon as engine starts. Left hand thread puller nut cap screws are probably 1/2" 12 thread. Some made post about 1930 are found with 1/2" 13 thread and a very few with 3/8" 16 Thread. All puller nuts are left hand thread and don't over tighten trying to line the cap screw holes with the puller nut. Some may but most won't and you can destroy the puller nut threads on the crankshaft trying to make them line up. Any Palmer cast iron castings with MFCO in a diamond were cast post 1937 By Manufactures Foundry, Waterbury, CT.

Thanks for the reply Richard. It has jib key on the flywheel. I also has brass oil pump with 1/8" piping through the crankcase. I did not see any holes where a label was attached. I have to check the waterpump soon to see if it has check valves. So this thing runs to the left if your looking at the flywheel from the front?
This will take some work, but at least it all came apart without heat.
Thanks for all the help. I will have to find some manuals so I can get back together and timed correctly.

Bryon brought the motor to the shop today, it fired right up and ran great, not a lot of Palmers in our area.
