A few years ago I inherited a basketcase from a friend who had begun the restoration but never completed. I have hull #8584 powered by graymarine phantom 4-75. I was also given a fair amount of info he had collected. My two primary questons are: did all units have a windshield? - mine does not have any holes in the tin where you would expect the posts to be. Also, did all units have the air flotation chambers? I do not recall my friend ever discussing nor had I ever seen them from the time he obtained the boat. I'm near Pittsburgh only an hour from Salem OH but have not had time to see the few boats there or make any new contacts - any help is appreciated.

Thanks, I will give him a try. I had his old contact info and had heard last year he wasn't well so I was hesitant to try to reach him.

Rob, Lou Dobbins contributes here quite often. He lists a Mullins 1938 Deluxe Sea eagle in the ACBS directory. He may be able to help. Try Lou at [email protected]

Greetings Basket case!

My 1938 Deluxe Sea Eagle is hull number 8527 and has a Lycoming model UAE 4 cylinder which is a 58 HP engine. Earlier boats used the UAB 45 HP engine.

I did not know that a late 38 or 39 ever used a 75 HP Gray. I thought I had read that they continued to use Lycoming engines.

An increase in HP would be a great help as they have a hard time getting up out of the water!

as to your questions: All Sea Eagles and Deluxe Sea Eagles had windshields. The Camp Mates did not if I remember correctly.

As far as I know, all of the Sea Eagles had 5 canvas covered galvanized tin flotation tanks. This was one of their claims to fame as the unsinkable boat. Most of them all rotted out and were removed eventually or during quasi restorations. I do have pictures but will need to digitize them. I have shots and dimensions of the flotation tanks.

The pic I have added here is of a boat restored with extra creature and eye appealing touches. But she is a late 36 or early 37 with the UAE as well and hull number 3522.

Let me now how I can further assist you.

Cheers,

Lew

Thanks Lew, I appreciate the response. My Sea Eagle was spotted by my friend while he was passing through Wyo. about 10 years ago - he drug it from the field after paying $75 for it and towed it to Pittsburgh to surprise his father who has since passed and they gave the boat to me. It had registration stickers from 1980 on it and was "mostly" there, save the windshield and flotation tanks. Any detail pics and dimensions of the tanks (or any other parts of the boat) would be greatly appreciated. We'll have no problem making the tanks at my buddie's shop.

Thanks again, Rob

Hey Lou, Could you please forward me some pics of the flotation tanks as well? I have 4 of the original tanks for my '34 but have never seen the 5th one that is referred to in advertising. I always assumed that maybe the gas tank was it. Anyways I did not realize they were canvas covered and I could benefit from any pics that could show placement in the boat. Thanks, Chris

Greetings Chris et al,

The 5th tank is a triangular shaped tank under the bow deck.

The pictures I have, if I can find them are from film about 30 years ago. I will locate them and see if they will do us any good. As to the measurements, they will be in the same place as the pics.

The rear tanks are about the same size as the gas tank if I remember correctly and are fairly square and mount on each side of the gas tank. Then there are 2 rectangular tanks, one on each side of the engine.

If you have 4 of the 5, would you please post the dimensions of them?

Cheers,

Lew

The 4 tanks I have are three rectangular ones and the one for the bow. Going from the largest of the rectangular ones 23" W x 17 1/4" H x 10 1/2" D. Sloped end only 14" H. Next is 14 1/2" W x 16 1/4" H x 7 1/2 D. Sloped end 15" H. Smallest is 10 1/2" W x 16 1/4 H x 7 1/2 D and sloped end 15" H. The bow tank is hard to describe in shape as it is shaped to fit the bow area. Forward end 15 3/4" x 6 3/4 rear 31" x 26 " and oval in shape I would say.

In thinking this through I think I am missing one of the engine compartment tanks? What do you think Lew?

Hi Chris,

Great pics! your tanks look original. The questions that come from these pics in my mind are:
1. The red looks to be the same color as the inside of my hull. Thus I would think it original. But no canvas? Things change in the production world however.
2. The 2 rear tanks are not the same size. I would have thought they would all be the same size. but then again, boat mfgr were common to use farmers in the winter as labor. There is some slop room at the rear end next to the fuel tank.
3. Looks like you are missing one side tank from the engine compartment. They should be the same size too from the ones I have seen.

I suspect (read: do not know for sure) that the canvas was installed on the 4 rectangular tanks as a noise abatement measure.

I found my file with pics and notes. I will go through them soon and put a cd together with scans for you.

Cheers,

Lew

Hey Chris,

Please email me with your mail address so I can send you a CD ROM with the images that I have and am in the process of scanning.

My grandfather had a Mullins Sea Eagle that I believe was made in the early 40s. Red with a blue windshield and a 90 hp Greymarine Fireball Four engine that was also red. Quite the boat. Fast for its day.
