Hello,
I am disassembling my Palmer BH-6; serial number 3524752. This engine has the S-N reverse gearbox. I pulled the rear bushing/flange off yesterday. The flange has some pitting. My mechanic advisor said he could build it up and then turn it down to original size to eliminate the pitting.

Questions:
Does anyone know if this flange is a standard size and a new one could be purchased rather than machine a new surface for the oil seal?

Do you know where to order a rear oil seal for this transmission? This would save me the effort of measuring and searching for the correct seal.

By the way I noticed that the flange-to-shaft has some "backlash" It is a sloppy fit. the key seems too small. There is a tiny hairline crack from one corner of the key slot but runs only a short distance towards the flange end. If I can't find a new one, I think the flange can be used, especially with some "fix-up". I'm not ready to machine a new one.

Thanks for any help/comments.

I'll post some photos of the "rebuild".

SO far It looks like this engine will be up and running in good shape. I hope EARLY this summer.

John

All the seals for the BH are availabe. Look in the Yellow pages for your area under bearings. Most bearing supply houses also sell seals.
This list is for the later engine with a Paragon Reverse gear. Your aft seal on the S and N reverse gear and your water pump seals may be different.
Hope this helps
Ernie

There are 2 possible seals for the rear of the crankshaft. Either will work ok.
These are all National Seal Numbers with dimesnions in inches. Dimensions are for shaft dia, housing bore and seal width.
Front crankshaft
qty 1 473213 1.312x2.250x.312 This seal can be changed without removing the front cover
Rear of Crankshaft (back of block)
Use either number
qty 1 473234 1.687x2.502x.312
qty 1 450154 1.687x2.502x,500
Water Pump
qty 2 471255 .625x1.375x.250 These are steel body seals. They are ok to use for fresh water or a show engine. For salt water you need a brass or ss body. When installing these in the water pump they face each other
qty 2 471529 reverse gear shift shaft
Rear of reverse gear (companion flange)
qty 1 470059 1.500x2.374x.500

Darn it! There I go again. I am having trouble detaching the "-6" (which I attached to model BH)
from the model number of this Palmer engine.

What should I do? I thought Dick's wry comment earlier would cure me for life. Any suggestions?
