I have a Sabb 10 single cylinder in a canal narrowboat. Built in 1973, It was overhauled a couple of years ago and since then has smoked badly and gets through 1 litre of oil (50% of sump capacity) in one oil change cycle (50 hours). I know the engineer who did the work as a personal friend, and trust him completely, but he has not yet come up with an answer to this problem. He has replaced the liner, pistons and rings twice, and is certain they are within the proper tolerances. any suggestion for other possible cause? |

Im have rebuilt quite a few engines in my day. I must admit I have never worked on a Sabb though. If its a 2 stroke I can't help you with the information provided, If its a 4 stroke check the crankcase ventilation, I have seen them build up crankcase presure and push oil up past the rings, It could be that simple Roger |

Thanks Solarrog. The subject of crankcase pressure has been mentioned elsewhere as well. Looks like a good way to go. Thanks again Roger |

Still no result. The device in the crank handle case that controls crankcase pressure has now been checked and is working normally. Smoke and oil use remain the same, ie 1litre in 50 hrs. and lots of smoke. Any other theories? We are now stuck for ideas. |

Oil ring installed upside down? Just a WAG. There must be some way of checking compression. Maybe someone can help. ( In my youth, I did cause a slight smoke problem because I did not install the piston rings properly. I believe there was a measurable difference in the cylinder that I messed up on.) Good Luck |

It could be a blocked exhaust. There is a swept 90 degree bend coming off the exhaust silencer box and this often partially blocks with soot and salt. Has caused a lot of smokey running on my Sabb 8H. |
