I'd love some advice on reconditioning magnetos. I've got a Stuart R3M which uses a Lucas SR1 magneto. Having found the one that came with it had a v weak spark, I've got hold of a second. However, after a year of only running occasionally in my shed, this magneto has also now got a v weak spark. Having compared to a friend's new SR1, both these are clearly well below what's needed, and sure enough don't have the oomph to start my R3M any more. Does anyone have any advice on what might be the cause, how I could get these back to their former glory, and whether you can protect a magneto so if left in a boat etc it won't run out of power. Thanks very much Ben |

Ben , if you are not using your boat,NEVER leave the magneto in it.Firstly because some low life will steal it.Secondly and more important. magnetos hate moisture,When not in use always store it in a warm dry place Handle them gently as sharp knocks etc can affect the magnet which inturn will reduce the spark output Dont over oil the bearings, check the points for correct gap and cleaness, the condensor can also contribute to poor spark(bosch #GD209,available from most car part shops, early Holden /mitsubishi will fit) Make sure the entire unit is super clean inside and out,no cracks in the cap, leads,or the wire from points, condensor etc. Check for tracking accross the cap Tests the leads for continuity(leads do brake down with age and moisture, check the connections at both ends of the leads Make sure you have a good earth between the maggy and engine, clean from rust oil, paint etc Best of luck,Todd |

thanks for that Todd. Lots of good tips. I'll get down to the shed, give it a once-over then leave it somewhere cosy for the winter! Ben |
