Recently had starting problems with my ph2w, so fitted new nozzles on the injectors and it seemed to be fine ( started fine on half throttle) but on the last outing it would not start when hot unless i went through the cold starting proceedure (manualy moving rack on pumps to full). Also when i engage forward gear the engine revs drop , sometimes stalling unless i quickly move it to full throttle and it very slowly picks up. Have not yet had the time to look into the problem but the boat is being lifted out in a few weeks and i will strip everything at that point. Would be gratefull if anyone could give me a few pointers in where to start !!. It has excellent compression and recently serviced injectors. |

Hello Martin. I don't think I can help much really, as I'm not an engineer, but I'm just trying to think what the problem could be. I'm wondering if it is something to do with the engine stop control mechanism or the governor? Maybe a linkage has loosened and needs adjusting? The only other thing I can think of is fuel starvation? Have you checked the filters and connections? I'm sure you've already looked at these things, or have planned to do so, but I can't think what would cause a 'hot' starting problem. You may remember we talked a while back re anodes. Well since then my PH2 has been out of the boat and completely stripped and rebuilt from the ground up. This was after sea water got into the bores and corroded the pistons, which then seized solid. The engine is now fine again, but funnily enough when I engage foward gear the revs drop alarmingly too, like yours, although it doesn't stall. I'm told that this is likely to be due to the tightness of the engine, ie it is not making much powere at idle, and the load is dragging it down as I engage forward. Do let me me know how you get on in the meantime. Doug |

Hi Doug, have seen your posts on another forum, stunning pics of your engine, I did have a problem with a fuel feed pipe to one of the pumps, it had perished and collapsing on itself, renewed the pipe and it ran better, it will get a strip down when the boat gets lifted out in a few weeks. Will get the pumps serviced at that point. I will let you know the outcome and wether or not i solve the engauging gear problem. My motor is not new and therefore tight like yours so i dont think thats the problem , more than likely something sticking as you say. All the best Martin. |

I'm glad you liked the pics of my engine, Martin. It was good to see it stripped down to its component form. Seeing how heavily engineered all the parts are makes one realize just how solid these beasts are! Re the engaging gear, sorry, wasn't meaning your engine was tight like mine is. I was just noting how mine was doing similar to what yours is doing. I would go on to say that when I first bought the boat my engine was 'hunting' quite a lot on tickover. I know it is a trait of these engines to do that, but mine was quite extreme. I remember back then that engaging forward gear dragged the revs down to such an extent I thought it would stall. I rectified this by simply spraying the fuel rack mechanism with WD40, and the results were instantanious. No more hunting, and a very even tickover. Anyway, good to hear from you, and fingers crossed you'll get it sorted very soon, and I look forward to hearing what the problem was. Doug |
